Do you have a book in you?

One of my classmates attended my first book-signing and the first thing she said to me was, “I always knew you had a book in you.”  It was a great compliment, but we all have a book in us!

I’m also frequently asked, “Where do you get your ideas from?”  The answer is simple: from life, from people, from things I’ve observed over the years, from stories that fascinate me….the list goes on and on. There is no lack of inspiration to write and it’s all around us.

The only thing stopping you from writing your own story is YOU! Not a writer? Become one. Don’t know where to begin? At the beginning. Lay out your story and write it. You will rewrite it several times, and the more you read it the more changes you will make until you feel it’s perfect. Then you send “your baby” off to the editor who will give it a professional edit…and then you will read it again. At the end of the process, you have a story to share that you can be proud of.

I’m going to write a separate blog on traditional publishing vs self-publishing on another day, but there are many ways to get your story in the hands of readers. You can publish a book, upload an Ebook or just create a blog and share it in sections. It all depends on your end-goal and what you hope to achieve. My goal with The Gift of Gisela was to share my mother’s story with as many readers as possible. I went with publishing a paperback as well as a Kindle version. I’ve had two book signing events that have been well received. I am extremely pleased and proud of my book!

This is the most important thing I want to leave you with: it’s never too late to make your dreams come true! I published my first book at age 67, after writing it for over 20 years. It was a life-long dream and I made it happen. There are no words to describe the feeling of accomplishment I felt when I held the first copy in my hands. I am currently finishing the edit on my second novel, Jillian Boone, and am already filled with excitement and anticipation about releasing it later in the fall. If you have a dream to be a writer, don’t let age or time deter you. If you believe it can happen—it will happen! I am living proof that it’s never to late to make your dreams come true!

With warmest regards,
